Four resources which I feel are available and important for parents to know are as follows:
1. Bragg Hill Family Life Center - They provide free tutoring services, enrichment programs for children afterschool, parent classes, and family participation events in order to get parents involved in their children's lives.
2. FASA - FASA provides neighborhood tutoring programs for Fredericksburg City Public Schools students to help with homework and practice for the Standards of Learning Tests. This service is completely free for any student in Fredericksburg. The teacher has to notify the person in charge of FASA in their building to let him/her know what the child's specific learning needs are.
3. Rappahannock Big Brothers / Big Sisters - This is a mentoring program to help foster the growth of social skills in troubled youth. I suggested this organization to "Jane's" mom because I feel that "Jane" would benefit from having someone to look up to and to have as a positive role model.
4. Breakfast Buddies - In our school, we have a program that the guidance counselor puts together, in conjunction with the University of Mary Washington, the counselor sends an email to teachers asking whether the student would benefit from having someone to talk to in the mornings, and to let the child know that there is someone there for them and that someone cares. "Jane" has a breakfast buddy and it is working out well.
